Previous Experiences and Projects
Sept 2017 - Present
Postdoctoral Researcher
Developed experiments to study perceptual decision-making and motor control in a clinical trial for brain-computer interface (BCI) using electrophysiological recordings from chronically implanted microelectrodes.
Performed experiments as part of a multi-site clinical trial, working with clinicians, engineers, and scientists
Languages used: Matlab, Simulink
Computational techniques: dimensionality reduction, neural decoding, psychophysics
Aug 2011 - Aug 2017
Graduate Student Researcher (PhD), University of Pittsburgh, Depts of Bioengineering and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Designed and carried out experiments to deliver tactile feedback to participants using a brain-computer interface to control a prosthetic robotic limb and assess its utility on functional hand and arm tasks
Developed & implemented system to deliver real-time tactile feedback to brain-computer interface (BCI) users
Languages used: Matlab, C++
Designed experiments using an anthropomorphic robotic arm and hand in a real-time, closed-loop BCI system
Used electrophysiological recordings & intracortical microstimulation in non-human primate (NHP) & human subjects
Led multi-institutional collaborative team of clinicians, engineers & scientists resulting in a high-impact publication picked up by over 170 news outlets internationally with 3 publications in preparation
Collaboration through DARPA with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab and Blackrock Microsystems
Implemented statistical analyses on sets of big data including real-time neural & kinematic data
June 2010 - July 2011
Student Engineer, Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), Applied Physics Division
Designed and created a process for automating signal analysis in recorded speech
Wrote, debugged and tested serial communication protocols and interrupt controlled data collection
Languages used: embedded C, Matlab
Protocols implemented: I2C, SPI, interrupt-driven processing
Tested and debugged code in simulated potential scenarios
